01

When Can a Child Be Assessed?

Assessment can begin as early as 18 months. By age 2, an experienced clinician can usually make an accurate diagnosis you can trust and act on. Early identification isn't a label to fear — it's the most powerful gift you can give your child. The younger the brain receives support, the more it adapts.

02

How the Autistic Brain Works

Autistic brains are wired differently — not worse, just different. Think of a highway with different routes, speeds, and exits. Both get you where you need to go.

  • Notice small details others miss
  • Experience sounds, lights, textures more intensely
  • Think in pictures and patterns
  • Need extra time to shift between activities
  • Develop deep, focused passions
03

What Autism Looks Like in Young Children

Many signs are misread as defiance, stubbornness, or personality. Watch for:

  • Repeating words or phrases (echolalia)
  • Toe-walking, hand-flapping, rocking, spinning
  • Strong reactions to sound, texture, or food
  • Meltdowns during transitions
  • Trouble with multi-step or implied instructions
  • Limited eye contact or unusual gaze patterns
  • Lining up toys instead of pretend play
  • Delayed speech or scripted phrases from shows
04

The Girls Who Go Undiagnosed

Autistic girls are often diagnosed years later — sometimes not until adolescence — because they learn to mask and mimic social rules. She might look:

  • Quiet at school, chatty and intense at home
  • Perfectionist, anxious about mistakes
  • One or two close friends instead of a group
  • "Shy" but actually overwhelmed
  • Academically strong, lost during unstructured time
  • All-consuming interests dressed up as hobbies

Without support, masking builds into anxiety, depression, and burnout. Early intervention rewrites that trajectory.

05

Why Early Intervention Changes Everything

The science is clear. Support before age 6 leads to dramatically better outcomes in communication, independence, and quality of life.

  • Communication skills develop faster
  • Social anxiety and meltdowns decrease
  • Confidence grows as the child understands themselves
  • Parents get real tools instead of isolation
  • Coping strategies stick when the brain is most flexible

A 5-year-old in therapy has a very different future than a 9-year-old just getting diagnosed. Every year counts.
